Portuguese emigration in the XIX century: estimation of legal departures to Brazil
Cristiana V. Andrade, University of Cambridge
In an attempt to contribute to the Portuguese international migration studies, this paper aims to show an estimation of legal migration from Portugal to Brazil during the nineteenth century. In this direction it will be firstly showed the estimations previously presented in the literature, in an attempt to link and compare the results already achieved. Moreover, this paper will present a quantitative analysis of the passport’s registers of Lisbon (number of emigrants, their sex and destination), conceded during the period between 1839 and 1897; and also the quantitative analysis of passport requests of 1886 and 1889. In this way, this paper aims not only to present a quantitative estimation of Portuguese emigration but also to propose a better interaction between researchers and knowledge in order to the enlargement of the results.
