A revision of Chandra Sekar’s decomposition method and its application to sex differentials in mortality in India

Decomposition techniques help in understanding the relative contribution of each age group to overall difference in life expectancy at birth (LEB) or any other indicator. Among the existing decomposition techniques, in mortality analysis, Chandra Sekar’s 1949 method seems to be the oldest. In the present paper Chandra Sekar’s 1949 method was revised and also shown to give exactly the same results as that of some other well-known decomposition methods. A study of sex differentials in India and its major states during 1993-97 using Chandrasekaran’s revised method indicates an urgent need to reduce the female childhood mortality in selected states of India.
