Differentials and determinants of infant and child mortality in rural India

Sethuraman Gunasekaran, Gandhigram Rural Institute

The study was based on the data collected for the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-1) of India. In order to find the variations and determinants of infant and child mortality, all the states in India were grouped in to three categories as Low, Medium and High mortality group of states. It is found that the Low mortality group is placed in a better position in terms of housing and environmental conditions than the other two groups. Women in high mortality group had experienced high fertility and exposed to longer duration of child bearing . The infant mortality rate continued to be high in the high mortality group. The multivariate analysis of data revealed the independent effect of various socio –economic and demographic factors on infant and child mortality. The findings of the study provide useful information to suggest viable strategies to reduce infant and child mortality in rural India.
