Determinants of maternal mortality: empirical evidence from India

Kuriath S. James, University of Kerala

A great deal of research are concerned with issue of health in terms of child health but nothing much is known on the important issue of maternal mortality. This paper tries fill this gap (1) by carefully reviewing the literature on maternal mortality (2) by estimating maternal mortality ratio from available indirect sources of data and (3) to find out the determinants of maternal mortality within a specific analytical framework. The analytical framework drawn from the Western experience examines the role of standard health care against the socio-economic development. The data for the study was collected through a primary survey in 2002-03. The finding shows that even in poor setting, standard health care determines maternal mortality than mere development indicators.
