The impact of migration on family structure and its function in Java

ndonesia's industrialization policy was to locate modern industries in the western part of Java, that is, in Jakarta and several cities in West Java, and it has attracted people from other part of Indonesia to come there. The migrants are consisted of young men and women. Most of them migrated in non-permanent basis. The young and single migrants met in the cities and got married. The new couples have to adjust their family life for survival. The impact of internal non-permanent migration on family structure is the splitting of nuclear family members into two households or more. The family divided could extent for months to decades long. The nuclear family has been extended to include maternal families of orientation to help in the upbringing of children. The study of the impact of migration upon family structure and functioning was done in Central and West Java provinces in Indonesia in 1996.
